Eric Carlson posted a brief preview on his UAF Hockey Blog of Friday’s Governor’s Cup game to be held in Fairbanks. I’m really bummed that I can’t get up there for it, but good luck guys!

Just because it’s break doesn’t mean the Nanook athletes are at rest. Some of the skiers participated in the Besh Cup in Anchorage.

Senior Marius Korthauer won the men’s 15-K race, beating 2006 Olympian James Southam by 6.5 seconds. This is only the second Besh Cup race.

Junior Aurelia Korthauer, Marius’ sister, took 8th in the women’s 10-K.

Many skiers from the men’s team competed, including Andreas Schnitzer, Einar Often, Alex Morris, Vahur Teppan and Robert Pakk. A Peter Morris was also listed as affiliated with UAF but is not on the team roster. My best guess is that he’s a relation to Alex Morris, who is from Anchorage. Also, David Apperson, a UAF cross-country runner, participated in the race.

Tamra Kornfield, of the women’s team, also competed. She took 38th in Sunday’s race.

Here are Saturday’s qualifier results.

Here are Sunday’s full results.

A video segment produced by the CCHA features Nanook goaltender Wylie Rogers. I hope the link works. I’m on ye olde home computer and was unable to watch it.

Also, the Alaska Hockey Academy three-day hockey camp will be put on by Coach Doc DelCastillo, his assistant coaches and some of the Nanook players.

The Athletic Department just announced the signing of four recruits for next season. However, I heard it here first, just didn’t want to be redundant. Carlson got the list from the GNAC’s complete list of NLI signers for GNAC schools (besides one rifle member, the hockey guys are the only ones on the list for UAF).

The four players are:

Erik Slemp, from the Drumheller Dragons. Their website is flashy, but short of his name and birthday, his profile page has nothing. He’s a youngster though, turns 18 just this coming summer.

Jarret Granbert plays for the Brooks Bandits. The forward currently (12/18/07) leads his team with 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points in 41 games.

Kaare Odegard plays for the Canmore Eagles.

Jordan VanGilder is a forward for the Tri-City Storm.

Two players that signed NLI’s previous to this season to play for the Nanooks are Ronald Meyers and Scott Enders, who both play for the Lloydminster Bobcats. Their website doesn’t have direct URLs for each player, but their roster really breaks their stats down into graphs and stuff, it’s really cool. Click on their names once you’re in to see what I’m talking about.

Both Slemp and Odegard are originally from Red Deer, AB, hometown of Nanook freshman Jeff Young.

Sheena Brown

Junior Sheena Brown got her first player of the week honors from the GNAC today, thanks to her awesome performances in Hawaii, leading the Nanooks to three wins despite nearly back-to-back games and 3,000 miles of travel. Here’s a News-Miner article on her.

Athletic Dept. in financial crunch December 17, 2007

According to this Sun Star article, the UAF Athletic department is looking at options to get out of a $500,000 deficit. The proposal as of now is an $8 fee per credit or $66 for full-time students, which would then give all students free access to every game. They are also discontinuing to pay for summer school for athletes.

My opinion: we pay enough fees already, and while I would be more than happy to attend every game for “free,” I know there are plenty of students who have never been to a game, never care to, and probably wouldn’t care if we cut the program completely, since it wouldn’t make any difference in their education.

‘Nooks squeak by with tie in OT against Buckeyes December 17, 2007

After Friday night’s win, the Nanooks got two really unlucky bounces in Saturday’s game against Ohio State and ended up tying the Buckeyes 2-2 in OT.

The Nanooks first goal was in the first period from Dion Knelsen on a powerplay. In the second period freshman Landon Novotney also scored on a powerplay, putting the Nanooks at a two-goal lead.

Later in the second period, Ohio State’s Tom Fritsche, who ’scored’ the disallowed goal on Friday night (it was ruled to have gone in off of his hand), gathered a point as his shot deflected off of Nanook defender Brandon Gawryletz and over goalie Wylie Roger’s shoulder. (*NOTE: The release from the athletic department says the first goal went in off of Gawryletz, but I seem to remember it being off of someone else).

The Buckeyes third goal came off of a similar deflection, Tommy Goebel took a shot that ricocheted off of Gawryletz’s stick and, if I remember correctly, off of Goebel’s back or chest, and into the goal.

The series concluded the Nanooks’ CCHA lineup for 2007 and they have a break until Dec. 28 and 29 when they will conclude this season’s Governor’s Cup Series in Fairbanks.

(Update Monday 12/17)
Here’s an article in the News-Miner about Saturday’s game, and the post-game press-conference, to which coach Doc DelCastillo brought out the entire team and recognized them individually.

After a painful OT goal by the buckeyes that was disallowed by referees, the Nanooks picked their step up and scored just seconds later, taking the first of the two-game series, 2-1. Freshman Jeff Penner put the game-winning goal in the net.

The Buckeye overtime goal was disallowed, refs said, because the puck bounced in the net off of Tom Fritsche’s hand. The Ohio State coach appeared to be very upset after the Nanooks’ goal (and the end of the game) and walked to center ice, it looked like to question the referees, but he then stood there, looking dazed and confused at the whole situation.

Sophomore Dion Knelsen scored the Nanooks’ first goal in the second period.
