According to this article in the Grand Rapids Press, the Western Michigan University hockey team was stranded this morning in Grand Rapids, due to inclement weather that canceled their first flight to Minnesota.
This story from Wood-8 TV explains the weather a little bit more.
According to weatherunderground.com, (at 11:20 p.m. Alaska time) it looks like the weather has gotten a little better.
Go to the games this weekend, 7 p.m. at the Carlson Center if you want to cheer on the Nanooks. I also hear there may be some very… audible… changes.

Welcome to the new Sun Star Sports Blog, Nanook Notes. This blog started out as a class project and I have since switched domains, so some of the quirks still have to be worked out, like the title banner and image hosting to the uafsunstar.com server. Thanks for your patience!

The Miami (Ohio) University Redhawks are ranked second in the nation right now, their first loss of the season coming to the Nanooks in December.

I was hoping to make it to this game, but other commitments took priority (you know, family) and I missed out.
Unfortunately, the Nanooks lost 77-57 to the UAA Seawolves in Anchorage. The win was the tenth straight for the nationally-ranked (19th to be specific) Seawolves. Colin Matteson led the Nanooks with 19 points and Mike Titus followed with 13.
Here’s the Anchorage Daily News article that was in Sunday’s paper, and their photo album.
After their slow start in their pre-GNAC season, the Nanooks have been improving on their season. They did lose both of their games in the AT&T Jamboree in Anchorage in the beginning of the winter break, against Christian Brothers University and Ferris State , but has fought its way back into some GNAC games.
In their GNAC season opener against St. Martin’s, the Nanooks held the Saints to a 74-74 tie, then losing by just four points, 90-86, in overtime.
Their first GNAC win came on the road at Western Oregon University, with a scoreline of 85-79. Sophomore Kevin Atkins led the Nanooks with 22 points before fouling near the end of the game.
This Thursday and Saturday the Nanooks have home-court advantage against Western and Central Washington Universities, at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

After getting off to an amazing 7-1 record early in the season, the women’s basketball team has had some trouble against their GNAC opponents.
The first game of the new year (Jan. 3) came as a 75-57 loss to the University of Seattle in Fairbanks. Then, on Jan. 5, GNAC newcomers Montana State-Billings took it to the Nanooks as well, 60-51.
MSU-B was in the Heartland Conference last year, and made it to the NCAA South Central Regionals before being bumped out of the NCAA tournament.
Tonight the Nanooks take on Seattle Pacific in Seattle, and Saturday they face Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.
Hendry makes NHL debut January 10, 2008

Jordan Hendry, a Nanook skater from 2002-2006, will make his NHL debut tonight for the Chicago Blackhawks against the Dallas Stars. He was recalled by the Blackhawks, and defender Danny Richmond was sent back down to Hendry’s team, the Rockford Ice Hogs.
Hendry left the Nanooks after his senior season, foregoing a final year of collegiate eligibility to join the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. That year of eligibility beyond his senior season is due to only playing three games in his junior year, but since Hendry’s profile is no longer online, I can only guess that an injury put him down.
In his four years with the Nanooks, the defenseman scored eight goals and had 26 assists.
