That Alaska’s Kikkan Randall, one of the best skiers in the nation, was thisclose to skiing for the Nanooks after she graduated high school in 2001. However, the timing was just right and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City were just around the corner, and she took that path instead.

Side note: I actually ran cross-country against Randall, well, I think she was in the large-schools races, but same meets, different races. She was FAST, and I’m pretty sure she won state her senior year, which would have been my freshman year.

The article also talks about Sigrid Aas, who, like Marius Korthauer, wasn’t highly recruited because no one thought she was fast enough.

Nanook hockey alum Aaron Voros is featured on NHL.com for his amazing battle of bone cancer that occurred when he was playing for the Nanooks. Voros was drafted by the New Jersey Devils before joining the Nanooks in 2001. In the ‘02-’03 season he had a pain in his knee which led to finding the bone cancer behind his kneecap. He returned for the ‘03-’04 season, amazingly, and after leaving the Nanooks, played for the Albany River Rats and was traded to the Wild in March of 2007.
