Last night the volleyball team took on a combo team of the Fairbanks Flyers and Nanook alumni. The Nanooks won the match in four sets: 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17. Coach Phil Shoemaker said that the performance wasn’t the greatest of starts to the season, but that the team was definitely in a good place to prepare for their matches against University of Central Missouri, ranked No. 13 in the nation, next weekend.
Is the NCAA a training ground for foreign Olympic teams? August 23, 2008

I found this article in the Christian Science Monitor interesting. It doesn’t focus on the NCAA giving scholarships to foreign athletes, though it is mentioned. The main focus is on athletes switching their national alliances in order to compete at the Olympic level. I found it through a skiing site, and what immediately popped into my head were our foreign skiers. Marius Korthauer, the Nanooks’ most recent national skiing champions (and only the second ever) is from Germany. Sigrid Aas, the Nanooks’ first national champion, is from Norway.
Looking through Nanook rosters, we have athletes from:
Austria-1
Canada- 21 (and not just on the hockey team)
Estonia-2
Germany-2
Norway-2
Russia-1
Saint Kitts-1
Serbia-1
Spain-1
Sweden-3
This list doesn’t count the Nanooks’ two best male skiers last year, Korthauer, and Vahur Teppan, of Estonia, who was subsequently invited to ski with his country’s “B” team.
In watching the Olympics in the past couple of weeks, many mentions were made of swimmers and track runners who compete at American universities.

The cross-country running team will start their season in Fairbanks for the second year in a row. This release from the athletic department has some of head coach Scott Jerome’s hopes for the meet and the season. The Nanooks will take on the Humboldt State (CA) Lumberjacks on August 28 and 30. The Thursday races will be held at 5 and 5:45 p.m. on the west ridge trails, and the Saturday races will be at 9 and 9:30 a.m. at Birch Hill.

There’s been some random bits out about the hockey team:
Junior defenseman Dustin Molle was featured on Inside College Hockey.
The Nanooks’ logo was voted “Best in the CCHA” by The Hockey News. The News-Miner also reported it.
No more ties! The CCHA has decided to do-away with tie games. After a five-minute overtime, teams will now go into a three-player shootout. If, after the shootout, the teams are still tied, one-player sudden-death shootouts will take place. The News-Miner also reported on the change, and how the team’s “Juice boy” sessions that usually take place after practice (last player to score has to fill the team’s water and juice bottles) may be under closer evaluation from coach Dallas Ferguson. And if you can’t get enough from those articles, US College Hockey Online also had a blurb.
The Nanooks are searching for a new equipment manager. Randy Pommenville resigned from the position to take another with the University as its emergency preparedness coordinator. Pommenville’s experiences as an Air Force firefighter, and disaster preparedness specialist for the Air National Guard contributed to his new position. He also said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family.
Finally, the Nanooks are having a season kick-off banquet on Sept. 20.

Former UAF basketball player Chris Adams, convicted of his involvement in burglaries of campus apartments just under two years ago, has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service. Adams, along with another player at the time, Chris Jordan, burglarized numerous on-campus apartments, many of them while students slept. They took mostly laptops, but some items like iPods, cameras, and wallets as well. Adams served as the “lookout,” while Jordan took the items, according to statements. Jordan was sentenced to eight months on additional drug-related charges. Adams has been recovering from a stroke in California. He plans to enroll in an evangelical college in California and hopes to again play college basketball.

Well, I went on vacation for a week, and a lot of articles have happened. Here are some links about Matt Emmons’ silver medal in the 50-meter prone, and his loss of gold (again) in the 50-meter three-position.
Anchorage Daily News article on Emmons’ silver medal in the 50-meter prone event.
News-Miner article on Emmons’ silver medal.
Athletic Department release on Emmons’ silver medal.
News-Miner article on Emmons’ final shot, which was essentially an accidental shot, that bumped him down to fourth place.
News-Miner article on Emmons gracefully handling loss of gold
And finally, a Community Perspective in the News-Miner from current Alaska rifle coach Dan Jordan, who was Emmons’ college roommate, on the sacrifice that elite athletes (and those who aim to excel in other areas of life) make, and the support that they need (or sometimes, don’t).
Jamie Beyerle, a more recent grad of the UAF rifle program, took fourth and fifth in her two events, placing just out of the medals. She is also mentioned in the Anchorage Daily News article above.

The News-Miner had two articles today featuring Alaskans in the Olympics. Katerina Emmons (formerly Kurkova), wife of former Nanook shooter Matt Emmons, won the first gold medal awarded at the Olympics. Former Nanook shooter Jamie Beyerle placed fourth, just out of the medals, in air rifle, but according to the article, that should give her much more confidence going into small-bore, her stronger shot.

“Athletes with Fairbanks ties win gold, place fourth in Olympics“
