This Western College Hockey blog post brings attention to Danny Martin’s News-Miner article about the shakeup in the roster since spring. Among the losses, goaltender Erik Largen, Nathan Lawrence, Jeff Young and Kyle Jones.

Also, senior Adam Naglich and sophomore Derek Klassen were named captains.

The Blue/Gold game will be held this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Patty Center on campus. Saturday, the Nanooks face the National Development & Training Program U-18 team at the Patty Center as well.

Men’s basketball turns over September 17, 2008

This News-Miner article describes the out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new look of the Nanook men’s basketball program. The team only returns five players from last year: Colin Matteson, Mladen Begojevic, Nash Maynard, Mike Anderson and Bobby Pico. Begojevic and Pico are still dealing with injuries, knees and back, respectively.

The team now has 10 new faces, mosly junior college transfers. One loss from the recruiting class is Mason King, of Naknek, who led Bristol Bay High to the 2A championships. Apparently, King decided that he was losing interest in basketball. He “drove” to Fairbanks to apologize to coach Clem Johnson, though. I’m guessing he didn’t drive from Naknek. He will enroll at UAA, but has told Johnson that if he decides to return to basketball, it will be at UAF.

According to this Anchorage Daily News hockey blog post, former Nanook Kyle Greentree was sent headfirst into the boards in the Oil Country rookie tournament, and was taken to the hospital on a stretcher. Luckily, he only suffered a compressed neck. Edmonton’s Geoff Paukovich, who hit Greentree, has a history with sketchy hits. In 2005, the blog notes, one of his hits from behind broke North Dakota’s Robbie Bina’s neck.

Greentree is trying to make the Calgary Flames, as he is a part of their organization after being traded from Pittsburgh over the summer.

Einar Often, the skier who won the Div. II sportsman award, was acknowledged by Chancellor Brian Rogers in his convocation speech just over an hour ago. Rogers asked Often to stand in the audience, and he was greeted with applause and a standing ovation for his deed. I’m guessing it’s the first time he’s been in a group of people much larger than the athletic department to be honored for the award, and it’s good that he can see how many people think what he did was excellent.

If, by now, you still don’t know what he did, check out this old post.

In a video Chancellor Rogers played at convocation, Often said that in the chaotic moment, he made a split-second decision to give Ray Sabo his ski pole, and that it was a good decision.

The Nanook cross-country team took fifth for both the men and the women in the Apple Ridge Run in Selah, Washington. The mercury hit 80 degrees, making for a hot run for some of the Nanooks. Leaving some of their skiing specialists behind (Ray Sabo, Einar Often, Julia Pierson and Anna Coulter), the top finishers for the Nanooks were Theresia Schnurr for the women (fourth place) and Chris Eversman, 11th, for the men. The course is the same one where the conference championships will be held, hopefully with cooler temperatures, in late October.

The Nanooks currently sit at no. 1 in the GNAC, by winning the opening conference game against the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets Thursday during the MSUB tournament. (the rest of the conference starts play next week). According to this News-Miner article, coach Shoemaker says that the Nanooks were out-hit, out-dug, out-served and out-blocked, but still managed more points. The Billings Gazette attributes the loss to not being able to finish.

Alaska split Friday’s games, with a win over Northern State in four games, and a loss to Hawaii-Hilo in three straight games. Though Shoemaker said that the first game against Hilo left something to be desired, he said that the Nanooks need to face that type of competition in order to prepare for the rest of the GNAC season.

Saturday, the Nanooks ended with two wins and a three-way tie for first place. Unlike the Nanook Classic last weekend, the MSUB tournament had no tie-breaker process, and the Nanooks ended up tied with Northern State and Hawaii-Hilo. The Nanooks beat Notre Dame de Namur in five sets, and swept the University of Mary in three. Korlyn Bolster was named to the all tournament team.
