Cody Reichard, a goalie for the NAHL’s Fairbanks Ice Dogs last season, will be in net against the Nanooks this weekend as a freshman for Miami-Ohio. Reichard never got to see the Nanooks in action during his stay in Fairbanks, due to the two teams’ travel schedules. Miami is currently ranked first in the CCHA.

In the Halloween spirit, USCHO has a list of the “scariest” things about the CCHA, including that the Nanooks’ defense is the top in the nation right now. The site credits it largely to goaltender Chad Johnson. I don’t want to knock Johnson, but Greenham had his first two career shutouts before Johnson had a win under his belt this season. Let’s give the rookie some credit too.

The hockey team also took a trip to see the Congressional Medal of Honor memorial in Indianapolis.

Also, the Volleyball team’s loss last night to GNAC leader Western Oregon, drops them to a tie for fourth with Northwest Nazarene. The Wolves swept the Nanooks in three sets. The second set was looking promising for the Nanooks, but they couldn’t seal it, and they came out flat in the third set.

The News-Miner has an article about Associate Head Volleyball coach Amy Phelps, and how she ended up coaching in Alaska.

The women’s basketball team was also ranked last in the GNAC coaches’ polls, including by Alaska coach Darryl Smith. But he said that he believes the team will finish much better, and he likes what he’s seeing so far.

Hockey senior Braden Walls was featured in the News-Miner today. Walls is the Nanooks’ top scorer right now with six points.

The men’s basketball team was picked to finish last in the GNAC. The Nanooks return only four players from last year– two starters, Colin Matteson and Mladen Begojevic, who dealt with numerous injuries last year.

Here’s an article in the UAA student paper, the Northern Light, about how much rivalry losses stink for the Seawolves’ volleyball team. The Nanooks have defeated the Seawolves twice this year, both in five-set matches.
UAA was also hit with a Title IX complaint. Here’s the Anchorage Daily News article. Ironically, we just talked about Title IX in my sport law class last night. UAF was hit with a similar complaint in 2001. Then, there were only 16 scholarships for women and 34 for men (I think those numbers are right). Here’s an article that former Nanook swimmer Rebecca George wrote about UAF’s ordeal with Title IX in April 2007. The article was later adapted for the News-Miner, where George is currently a writer. Now, the Nanooks have two more scholarships for men than women, I don’t remember the precise number, but I do remember that it was just about two.

Apparently, Anchorage’s six women’s team share just two locker rooms, while the men have three locker rooms between them, with the men’s hockey and men’s basketball teams having their own locker rooms.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner today had an article about freshman hockey defender Cody Butcher, and his sister, Carly, who is in her first year playing soccer for D-I powerhouse University of Southern California.

This USCHO.com article talks about the 48 percent of Div. I coaches who are coaching for their own alma maters. Hockey coach Dallas Ferguson is one of those coaches. He’s not mentioned specifically in the article, but it’s interesting.

Also, in this article published a few days ago, the Nanooks are ranked No. 2 in scoring defense, second (best) in goals against average, and are in a four-way tie for sixth place in the CCHA.

Sun Star hockey reporter Lexie Black is getting some attention across the country this weekend. She live-blogged tonight’s game for the BG News sports blog, and will be writing an article for the BG Daily as well.

Here are her blog posts on tonight’s 1-0 loss.

Scoreless First Period in Alaska

Still scoreless after two in Fairbanks

Falcons win late

It was a tight game. I think at the end shots were even: 30-30. The lone goal came late from BGSU’s Brandon Svendsen. As far as the play goes, it was pretty intense at times, but the second period was kindof a snooze. Hardly any whistles and the period was over like that.

A look at what’s ahead for the Maine Black Bears, as well as a look at how they did (from a hometown perspective) in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush last weekend in Fairbanks. The Black Bears lost to UAA before defeating the Nanooks 2-0.

After the Nanooks whooped up on Mercyhurst to a 5-0 win, Ryan Hohl’s new hairdo was good enough to make the news. Also noticed about Hohl (by me), was that he didn’t get a whole lot of playing time, which is pretty unusual– at least compared to last year, and was sitting extra penalties for other people.
