Doyle Woody, the Anchorage Daily News’ hockey guy, devoted a whole post in his hockey blog to the Nanooks’ success under first-year head coach Dallas Ferguson. Some of the Nanooks’ highlights:

  • Chad Johnson’s 1.63 Goals Against Avg. (Seventh in the nation)
  • Johnson’s .941 Save percentage (ninth in the nation)
  • Team 1.38 goals per game avg. (third-fewest in the nation)
  • 91 percent penalty killing efficiency (11th in the nation)
  • 8-4-1 record overall, 6-3-0 CCHA; tied for third in the conference

And if you look at the CCHA stats page:

While the Nanooks’ defense is on, their offense could still use a little help. The first time Nanooks show up on the top scorers’ list is a big tie for 26th with Adam Naglich and Dion Knelsen. Also, the Nanooks are eighth in scoring offense in CCHA play, but second in scoring defense (in CCHA. The ‘Nooks are first in scoring defense in overall play). Last in penalty minutes (CCHA and overall), that’s good. No. 9 in power plays.

Note: The above stats (not from the ADN blog) are ranks among CCHA teams, not nationally.

On one of the NCAA’s ranking sites, though Anchorage is ranked No. 19 (in the nation), the Nanooks did receive 14 votes. That’s not a whole lot, but someone was thinking of us.

Yeah, I know it’s Thanksgiving Break, but… whatever.

US College Hockey Online
- towards the end there’s a bit about the Nanooks.

A few recent Nanook hockey alumni (Darcy Campbell, Jordan Hendry and Jeff Penner) donated the money for 15 new exercise bikes for the team. All three former Nanooks are playing on AHL teams.

Here’s a News-Miner article about Assistant Captain sophomore Derek Klassen, and how he can keep his cool in stressful situations on the ice.

The Lake Superior State University hockey team is headed up to Fairbanks this weekend. Here’s the Soo Evening News’ preview of the weekend. Note: The Lakers haven’t won in Fairbanks since 2000.

Also, I just found this link, it has more to do with the Michigan series, but it’s basically a profile of head coach Dallas Ferguson.

Despite a daunting 27-15 deficit going into Sunday’s ski races, the Alaska ski team rallied back to beat the UAA Seawolves and take the Nordic Cup.

The women had the first three collegiate finishers (behind red-shirting Aurelia Korthauer), and the men had first, second and third place in Sunday’s races.

Coach Scott Jerome praised the tenacity of his team: “On the women’s side, Anna Coulter fell (Saturday), but she got back up, chased down the UAA skier in front of her, and passed her.”  (excerpted from Tom Hewitt’s article which appears in today’s Sun Star.)

Senior Chad Johnson, recently named the CCHA’s goalie of the week, was featured on Inside the CCHA radio. You may have to download Microsoft Silverlight (yeah, I’d never heard of it either) to listen. Johnson talks about some of the challenges in adjusting to a smaller rink at Ewigleben arena, and about mentoring freshman goalies Scott Greenham and Eric Babcook.

Johnson was also mentioned on the NHL FanHouse blog, as one of the big players to watch before hitting the NHL. Johnson was drafted by Pittsburgh before joining the Nanooks. “One of the other awesome stories in the country so far is the play of Alaska,” author Bruce Ciskie says, which he attributes partially to solid play from Johnson.

Justin Brossman, the CCHA’s rookie of the week, was also mentioned on USHL weekly.

The Nanook swim team…well, kicked ass this weekend at the Nike Cup. Four Nanooks are headed to the NCAA championships in March (they made “A” cuts) and many more made “B” cuts. Sam Zinsli, Mar Brunet, Courtney Nichols and Mariya Pavlovskaya all hit the mark this weekend. Zinsli was also named the PCSC swimmer of the month just before the meet started. (I can’t for the life of me find the PCSC site, so the Alaska page will have to do) Here are some links:

For next week’s Sun Star, we’re working on an article about the Nanooks’ fancy new swimsuits. They got the kind that the Olympians wear that shed water better than skin or something like that. Fancy. Effective. Legal. It’s pretty sweet. A Nanook swimmer hasn’t qualified for nationals in two years.

The hockey team finished up its series at Ferris State with a sweep. Here are some of the stories out of that:

Chad Johnson and Justin Brossman named CCHA players of the week (goalie and rookie, respectively) Johnson earned his second shutout of the season on Saturday, and Brossman scored the game-winning goal, the first of his career.

Saturday’s game was “Sarah Palin night” for the students of Ferris State. However, their power blazers and paper signs didn’t do a whole lot to affect the Nanooks.
