After the departure of top scorer LaQuita Jordan after just one semester, and Amonda Francis, women’s basketball coach Darryl Smith needed some guards. He got Jasmine Marshall and Princess Eduarte. Marshall is a player whom Smith was originally recruiting when he got Jordan. Eduarte, from Barrow, was a 3A all-state player in Alaska.
Marshall was academically ineligible last semester, but has apparently gotten things together, while Eduarte stayed in Barrow to take care of some family business.
I’m kindof leery of players who have recently been academically ineligible and were considering giving up basketball all together, especially for someone from California, who will NOT enjoy Fairbanks in January. If you’re not sure if you want to keep playing basketball, and school isn’t your priority, it’s a tough road to keep someone around, in my opinion.

Just halfway through the season, the hockey team has already accumulated the same amount of wins it took them all season to reach last year. Here’s a Daily News-Miner article on it.
I just picked it up online/radio for part of the press conference (still going on) and it sounds like we lost, and also sounds like the whole team is in the room for the conference. (Danny Martin of the News-Miner just asked for “Ryan Hohl, wherever you are…”) Okay, I guess it was a 3-2 overtime loss.
Dallas Ferguson is currently thanking the fans (why the team is all there) and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
The ‘Nooks are still tied for third place in the CCHA.

This News-Miner article says that La-Quita Jordan and Amonda Francis are both leaving the women’s basketball team. They don’t give any reasons. I’d already heard that La-Quita was leaving but not Amonda.

The Nanooks beat Western Michigan University 6-3 tonight. I only listened to the third period, but wow, four goals in the period; three from the Nanooks and one from the Broncos.
The ‘Nooks are now tied for third place in the CCHA and if they complete the sweep tomorrow night they could have third place all to themselves. Game stars: Ryan Hohl with two goals, Ron Meyers with two assists, and some WMU guy whose name I didn’t catch on the radio.

After a shaky start to their season, the men’s basketball team won their third game in a row last night against St. Leo’s, of Florida. The Nanooks took down the Lions 97-81 in a game that top-scorer Emmanuel Jenkins described as “fun”… “focused fun.”

Not by me, of course, but the Nanooks are doing much better than expected by the media and coaches at Media day earlier this season. As this Michigan Live article points out, the Nanooks were picked to be last in the league, along with Western Michigan, who the nanooks take on at home… well, as I type this, and tomorrow night.
Also, here’s a College Hockey news article about how good the Nanooks are doing, especially when it comes to senior goaltender Chad Johnson (and all other things defensive).
Since it’s Christmas break, I’ll be updating less frequently and more briefly, sorry. I’m at home with my family and want to spend time with them, especially with some health issues going on.
If the basketball teams were playing in Anchorage over break, I’d definitely hit that up. Maybe I’ll check out the ski competition (big maybe) but we’ll see how things turn out.

The Daily News-Miner profiled two Nanooks today: men’s basketball player Nashorn Maynard, and freshman hockey player Justin Filzen.
Nash is leading the Nanooks in rebounding in his second year with the Nanooks (well, second semester), and even though I haven’t seen him play yet, it sound like he’s doing really well.
Filzen centers the Nanooks’ fourth line, while not noted for their scoring, they’re a line made for grinding and keeping the game going– and they’ve gotten a few points too. Filzen’s speedy, but you notice the speed even more when he’s out there with fellow freshman Ron Meyers.

Check out this nice commentary on the remaining games in the CCHA before the break. There’s some nice stuff about the Nanooks in there.
The Nanooks take on Western Michigan Friday and Saturday night. I won’t be able to go, since I’ll be home for break by then, but I wish I could be!

Nanook newcomer Emmanuel Jenkins was named one of the GNAC’s co-players of the week. Jenkins shared the honor with former Nanook Kenny Barker, currently donning the green and gold for UAA after sitting out last season due to conference transfer rules.
Ironically, Barker was the last Nanook to receive the honor in 2007.
Jenkins scored 52 total points last weekend in two games against St. Thomas and Virginia State.
