The Shippensburg Raiders are in town again and the Nanook swimmers took them under Friday, (a come-from-behind win) and hope to do the same again (although probably not starting behind) tonight for Senior Night (which means I should probably go down there at some point eh?). Seniors honored will be Samantha Zinsli, Amanda Hartman, Joann Kump (the only three who have been with the Nanooks since the swim team’s re-emergence in 2005) and Mar Brunet.

Here’s a pre-meet article about their goals for the weekend.

The Nanooks’ offense took it to the Ohio State Buckeyes last night with a 4-1 victory. Freshman Adam Cardwell scored his first collegiate goal, and Kevin Petovello, Ryan Hohl and Ron Meyers added tallies for the Nanooks.

Here’s Doyle Woody’s blog post on the game. Fairbanks homeboy Hunter Bishop didn’t have a point in the game. Woody’s post says the Buckeyes were No. 14, while the Nanook home page says they were No. 13.

Verdict from USCHO is that the Buckeyes are/were ranked No. 14 in the nation. (If you click on that link after they update the rankings though, I believe it will be gone because it’s a general page, not date-specific).

I wasn’t at the game, but I’ll hopefully be there tonight!

Though the Saints routed the Nanooks a few weeks ago in Washington, Alaska is hoping to show that they are not the same team they were then. Coach Smith says that the team has a good attitude and can compete, even with just six players. Smith says the team has played more cohesively since then.

Senior Cristina Bruketta, out with a sprained kneecap, isn’t a definite on the play or sit list, but coach Smith said he knows she’s hoping to be ready to take on Anchorage in Anchorage next Wednesday.

Here’s a Monday article from the News-Miner about the Nanooks’ good attitude helping them pull a point out of the weekend in Northern Michigan.

Sean Cahill, a Nanook goalie recruit from Calgary, plays for the Okotoks Oilers in the AJHL. Here’s a High River Times article about Cahill and his plans to join the Nanooks in 2010.

Here’s the CCHA’s preview of the four top-six teams playing each other this weekend; including Ohio State coming up here to Fairbanks. The Nanooks have the league’s top goaltender, senior Chad Johnson, and the Buckeyes have the league’s top-scoring rookie in Ian Boots (21 points). Also playing for the Buckeyes is Fairbanks native Hunter Bishop, a sophomore who also has 21 points this season.

The Nanooks also signed forward Andy Taranto, of Downers Grove, Ill. Taranto plays for the Fargo Force. Here’s Doyle Woody’s post, which he got word of from Chris Heisenberg’s recruiting site.

Here’s a News-Miner article from today about how Brandon Knelsen’s goal this past weekend in Northern Michigan pumped up the Nanooks’ momentum, helping them get the tie. Knelsen started the season on the first line with his brother Dion, but is now back on the fourth line, but from his attitude as represented in the article, he doesn’t mind. He wants to play.

Speaking of the News-Miner– I may not be able to devote as much time to this blog or to attending Nanook sporting events since I will be starting an internship with the News-Miner’s sports department tonight. I will be covering high school sports, so I probably won’t be able to attend many evening events for the Nanooks. I’m really bummed to miss the hockey games this weekend. But there’s this whole “real world” thing that I suppose I should start looking into before I graduate in 3 1/2 months. Wish me luck!

Today the rifle team was handed its first defeat since October 2007. The No. 2 Mountaineers took a 19-point victory, 4653-4634, their first win over theĀ  No. 3 Nanooks since 1991. The Nanooks took the smallbore competition by 13 points, but let a 32-point deficit in air rifle get the best of them. Layne Lewis led the Nanooks in smallbore with a 580 score, while Patrik Sartz led the N anooks in air rifle with 586.

Between the two schools there are 23 national championships since 1983 (that means that in 26 years, only three championships have gone to another team).

Mike Anderson comes up big for Nanooks January 25, 2009

Alright, I can’t just include a little link to this one. The men’s basketball team won against Western Oregon this weekend 79-76.

Mike Anderson, a sophomore who has been with the Nanooks three years (he red-shirted his freshman year) usually watches much of the game from the bench. Last season he averaged 1.3 points and had only 90 minutes of playing time.

Last night, Mike Anderson started the game, put in 25 minutes and was tied for top scorer for the ‘Nooks with 15 points (with Nash Maynard) and had eight rebounds. He scored five points in the final 90 seconds of the game to put the Nanooks ahead.

I’m just glad to finally see him get some time, and he shone. Mike is one of three players who is still around from the Ostanik era, and probably one of the team’s most-often benchwarmers. Sitting on the bench through most of every game is tough, really tough. I know. But apparently his attitude about it is good enough that coach Johnson didn’t have a problem starting him.

Here’s the News-Miner’s article on it.

Anderson and Maynard had 15 points and eight rebounds each, Colin Matteson added 13 rebounds for the Nanooks and Matteson, along with Jon Moe and Emmanuel Jenkins, the team’s overall leading scorers, each tallied 10 points.

The women’s basketball team lost another close one this week at the Patty Center to Northwest Nazarene, 60-53. Still with only six players, the Nanooks had a lead and lost it towards the end.

The hockey team rallied in the third period for a 2-2 tie with Northern Michigan and then lost 2-0 in the shootout. Scott Greenham became the first Nanook goalie to go unbeaten in his first four starts. Down 2-0 in the second period, Brandon Knelsen scored late and in the third, the Nanooks peppered 19 shots on goal, with Braden Walls scoring to tie it up. NMU coach Walt Kyle said that he thought the Nanooks “deserved better” (ie, should have won) because his team didn’t do very good with the puck. But I guess that’s how the bounces go.

Doyle Woody, the ADN’s hockey blogger, did a quick re-cap of the AHL players with Alaska connections. The post includes former Nanooks Tyler Eckford (Lowell Mass. Devils), Curtis Fraser (Peoria Rivermen), Jeff Penner (Providence Bruins) and Kyle Greentree (Quad City… somethings).

The ski team hit the trails at Birch Hill for the Wooly Rhino Classic, and the Tsalteshi trails at Skyview High School in Soldotna for a Besh Cup set of sprints. Oyvind Watterdal of the men’s team and Aurelia Korthauer, who is red-shirting for the women this year, won the Wooly Rhino Classic. Watterdal led four other Nanooks who finished in the top five; Einar Often, Ray Sabo, Erik Soderstrom and John Parry. Korthauer did the same for the women, with Theresia Schnurr in second, assistant coach Ingrid Olson in third, and twin sisters Julia Pierson and Anna Coulter in fourth and fifth.

In Soldotna, freshman Rebecca Konieczny took second in the sprint with a time of 3:48.86, just half a second behind the winner.

Associate Athletic Director for external affairs, Patrick Lee, is leaving Fairbanks. Lee was offered a job with Learfield Sports in Fresno, Calif. The article mentions some of the public criticisms of Lee, including that he knew men’s basketball coach Clemon Johnson who was immediately hired as an ‘interim’ replacement for Frank Ostanik, and then became the hired head coach. Also, in December, Lee was charged with DUI, though the case has not yet been resolved by trial or plea bargain.

Last night the hockey team got shut out 2-0 by Northern Michigan in Marquette. Northern Michigan is in a three-way tie for eighth in the CCHA, and had the 11th offense in the league (The Nanooks were 10th) before Friday’s contest. The article quotes senior Trevor Hyatt, who is one of 20 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award. Hyatt is profiled in this week’s edition of the award’s newsletter.

Thursday at the Patty Center, the women’s basketball team, with only six players, lost 55-50 to the Seattle Pacific Falcons.
