The UAF assistant skiing and running coach, Ingrid Olson, is heading to nursing school, and the Nanooks are now looking for an assistant coach.

Also, the All-Sport banquet will be May 1 at the Princess Lodge. See the release for information on how to get tickets. Former Nanook hockey goaltender Keith Bartusch will emcee the event.

Two more Fairbanks-area athletes have been added to Nanook rosters. Heather Edic, a runner/skier from Lathrop High School, led the Wolfpack to a first-place finish at the Region VI meet, and took sixth at state. In skiing she tied for first place in the Region VI meet with Marisa Rorabaugh of West Valley. She’s expecting to major in mechanical engineering.

For the men’s basketball team, Eielson player Colten Growden signed a NLI to play for the Nanooks next season. Growden racked up a career 1,000 (plus) points in his career at Eielson.

The volleyball team recently announced the addition of libero Allison Oddy, of British Columbia, to next year’s roster.

Speaking of the volleyball team, I think this weekend they have an unofficial “spring league” matchup against UAA. The contest is taking place supposedly “Halfway” between Anchorage and here at Houston High School. Being from Houston myself (go Hawks!) I, and everyone else should know, that Houston is nowhere close to “halfway” between Anchorage and Fairbanks. It’s about an hour North of Anchorage and five hours south of Fairbanks (300 miles to 60 miles).

The skiing team signed Anchorage’s Tyler Kornfield, this year’s high school Classic champion. Kornfield’s sister Tamra also skied for the Nanooks and graduated in 2008.

Here’s an article from the News-Miner about Chad Johnson’s bittersweet emotions at the Final Four as a spectator and at the skills challenge as a participant.

The men’s basketball team signed local high school players Cole Daniel and Reuben Pike yesterday. The Hutchison Hawk players recently brought back the 3A state championship trophy back to Fairbanks with a win over the Nome Nanooks.

Finally– some local kids! To top it off, Pike will already be getting free tuition because his mom works for the U. Talk about saving money!

Both Daniel and Pike say they want to study architecture. I wonder who didn’t tell them we don’t have an architecture department?

In other news, Evan Matteson and Kyle Rische have left the team.

At the Frozen Four Skills Challenge tonight, Chad Johnson shut out all of the East skaters to shoot on him, but the East won 16-8 in the competition, which included both men’s and women’s teams.

What does the future hold for NanookNotes? April 11, 2009

First, as a little ego-inflating moment for myself, I was told that I (personally, not just the Sun Star) got a few shoutouts at the hockey banquets from Dallas and the assistant coaches, thanking me for my coverage. I’m guessing it was about this, since I only wrote a few hockey articles this season.

If you’re reading this coaches, it’s my pleasure to cover the Nanooks, and really nice to know that my stuff is appreciated. I send out shout-outs to Dallas for bringing the Nanooks back into the game. Wherever they went, he found them. I also have to send out another shout out to Dion Knelsen for his jumping up at the glass at the fans after the game-3 win over OSU. It still blows my  mind away (in a good way).

On to “business”:

This blog actually takes a good chunk of time sometimes (with seeking out good links or the related poking around the Internet that that involves when I find something else interesting.)… I know that I don’t always provide great commentary (or commentary, depending on whether you think I’m great or not), but being a full-time student and editor of the campus newspaper, there were always times I just wished I had more time to dedicate to some really cool features and “didja know that?” kind of things.

Since I am graduating in exactly a month (yikes!) the future of Nanook Notes is somewhat up in the air. Considering that Nanook Notes’ URL is “Sunstarsports” the blog will definitely be staying with the Sun Star, as will all of my previous posts. It will be up to next year’s staff to decide whether or not to continue Nanook Notes with a new sports reporter.

Depending on my situation (I don’t have a job or anything lined up yet–double yikes!) I may continue blogging about the hockey team if I stay in Fairbanks (or heck, maybe even if I don’t!) but that will have to be decided later. I’ll add a link to a new site if one is created. As far as why I probably won’t cover other sports, it mostly comes down to a time issue. Hockey is my first and foremost sport; I’ve played since I was nine years old. And like I said, it takes a hunk of time. My normal morning news-browsing/e-mail checking routine takes about an hour to an hour and a half, not usually including blogging time; time I probably won’t have with a “real” job.

Dang, I’m starting to get a little emotional. Write down the date, because this is the closest you will likely ever be to seeing me cry in public. No tears here. Maybe some nostalgia, but NO TEARS :p

Anyways, I hope that my little blog that started out as a class project has at least garnered a few “regular” readers, and that everyone who has googled the Nanooks or even someone else and stumbled upon it hasn’t felt like it was a total waste of their time.

This is probably not a total farewell. If stuff happens, I’ll still keep it updated. It’s crunch time for the semester though!

Johnson, Hyatt All-Americans April 11, 2009

Senior hockey players Chad Johnson and Trevor Hyatt today became the first two Nanooks to be named All-Americans together (or in the same year, since they’re on different lists.)

Johnson was named to the All-West Second Team by the American Hockey Coaches’ association. Minnesota-Duluth’s Alex Stalock took the first-team goalie spot.

Tonight Johnson is in D.C. represenging the West in the Frozen Four Skills Challenge as one of two goalies on the West team. The other goalie there, I believe, is Jeff Lerg, of Michigan State.

Trevor Hyatt was named to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS All-Senior All-American Second Team (man, that’s a mouthful). Curtis Fraser is the only other Nanook to have ever been named to the team (He also made second team in 2007). Trevor was  selected as the UAF Civil Engineering Student of the Year, and last weekend at the Alaska hockey banquet was named the Dirk Anderson Scholar Athlete and the Ryan Reinheller Hockey Humanitarian.

Both players graduate in May: Johnson with a Psychology degree and Hyatt with a Civil Engineering Degree. Johnson will start his professional career in the fall (he was drafted by the Penguins in 2005).

Michigan State goaltender Jeff Lerg was awarded the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award for hockey today. Alaska’s Trevor Hyatt was also one of the finalists.

Lerg and Hyatt were both in my top 3, and if Trev didn’t get it, I’m glad it at least stuck in the CCHA.

In other CCHA news, the Miami RedHawks are in the NCAA Championship game. Good luck to them, also.
