Alright, there’s a bunch of links here, I’ll let them speak for themselves:

Women’s basketball signs two Eielson girls- I think the community will really like this influx of local talent, plus one player that formerly played for Coach Smith. Also, Colten Growden, a local recent signee for the men’s basketball team, broke his leg.

The swim team signed North Pole grad Sarah Meierotto

The hockey team added two wings and a goalie, Steve Thompson, who’s from Anchorage. With the departure of nearly full-time starter Chad Johnson, I’d imagine that Thompson will at least start out fighting for a starting role, though I think Greenham has, in his limited play time (four shutouts) proved worthy.

The ski/running team has added one Estonian and lost another, gaining woman Marit Rjavob and losing Robert Pakk. Oyvind Watterdal, who was the only man to qualify for the NCAA championships in skiing, will also be returning to Norway, as he was on a one-year exchange. Assistant coach to the two teams, Ingrid Olson, is also leaving, as she will be going on to nursing school.

The men’s basketball team is losing big-man Mike Anderson, who hopes to load up on classes next year to graduate in May and go on to law school. Anderson didn’t have a huge role on the team, but in one game this year came out blazing, and improved from there on out, being voted the team’s most improved player. His departure leaves leading rebounder Nashorn Maynard as the Nanook with the most time put in at Fairbanks. Maynard joined the Nanooks in the Spring semester of 2008. Anderson, who towers at 6-8, is the fourth of the Nanooks’ tallest players to head out this season. Colin Matteson is graduating, his brother Evan and Kyle Rische are also leaving.

I wonder if this surge of Alaska recruiting is also a tactic to save the department money by giving scholarships for in-state tuition. With the most recent signings for hockey, men’s and women’s basketball, skiing and swimming, I count eight Alaskans. I don’t think there were even eight Alaskans in the whole department this year (until you count in the last-minute additions to the women’s basketball team)… alright, there probably were eight Alaskans in the whole department, but certainly not from one recruit class, so early, I’m betting.

… alright I did the math and there were 42 Alaskans in the program this year (not including the last-minute additions to the WBB team). Some of them overlap from skiing and running, and many I don’t think competed (or competed much), but I guess I was wrong. It just seems like a lot all at once right now.

The UAF assistant skiing and running coach, Ingrid Olson, is heading to nursing school, and the Nanooks are now looking for an assistant coach.

Also, the All-Sport banquet will be May 1 at the Princess Lodge. See the release for information on how to get tickets. Former Nanook hockey goaltender Keith Bartusch will emcee the event.

What does the future hold for NanookNotes? April 11, 2009

First, as a little ego-inflating moment for myself, I was told that I (personally, not just the Sun Star) got a few shoutouts at the hockey banquets from Dallas and the assistant coaches, thanking me for my coverage. I’m guessing it was about this, since I only wrote a few hockey articles this season.

If you’re reading this coaches, it’s my pleasure to cover the Nanooks, and really nice to know that my stuff is appreciated. I send out shout-outs to Dallas for bringing the Nanooks back into the game. Wherever they went, he found them. I also have to send out another shout out to Dion Knelsen for his jumping up at the glass at the fans after the game-3 win over OSU. It still blows my  mind away (in a good way).

On to “business”:

This blog actually takes a good chunk of time sometimes (with seeking out good links or the related poking around the Internet that that involves when I find something else interesting.)… I know that I don’t always provide great commentary (or commentary, depending on whether you think I’m great or not), but being a full-time student and editor of the campus newspaper, there were always times I just wished I had more time to dedicate to some really cool features and “didja know that?” kind of things.

Since I am graduating in exactly a month (yikes!) the future of Nanook Notes is somewhat up in the air. Considering that Nanook Notes’ URL is “Sunstarsports” the blog will definitely be staying with the Sun Star, as will all of my previous posts. It will be up to next year’s staff to decide whether or not to continue Nanook Notes with a new sports reporter.

Depending on my situation (I don’t have a job or anything lined up yet–double yikes!) I may continue blogging about the hockey team if I stay in Fairbanks (or heck, maybe even if I don’t!) but that will have to be decided later. I’ll add a link to a new site if one is created. As far as why I probably won’t cover other sports, it mostly comes down to a time issue. Hockey is my first and foremost sport; I’ve played since I was nine years old. And like I said, it takes a hunk of time. My normal morning news-browsing/e-mail checking routine takes about an hour to an hour and a half, not usually including blogging time; time I probably won’t have with a “real” job.

Dang, I’m starting to get a little emotional. Write down the date, because this is the closest you will likely ever be to seeing me cry in public. No tears here. Maybe some nostalgia, but NO TEARS :p

Anyways, I hope that my little blog that started out as a class project has at least garnered a few “regular” readers, and that everyone who has googled the Nanooks or even someone else and stumbled upon it hasn’t felt like it was a total waste of their time.

This is probably not a total farewell. If stuff happens, I’ll still keep it updated. It’s crunch time for the semester though!

The University of Alaska Board of Regents unanimously backed a resolution criticizing the change to the NCAA’s Div-II basketball playoff format. Gov. Palin backed the resolution.

Take that! NCAA!

So there’s some other pressing stuff going on on campus that I’ve been working with all night, but Trevor Hyatt has been nominated for the Humanitarian something-or-other award. Check it out here.
With all the awards he’s been nominated for (He was also nominated for this one last year), he’d better get one! Trevor, you rock!

Associate Athletic Director for external affairs, Patrick Lee, is leaving Fairbanks. Lee was offered a job with Learfield Sports in Fresno, Calif. The article mentions some of the public criticisms of Lee, including that he knew men’s basketball coach Clemon Johnson who was immediately hired as an ‘interim’ replacement for Frank Ostanik, and then became the hired head coach. Also, in December, Lee was charged with DUI, though the case has not yet been resolved by trial or plea bargain.

Last night the hockey team got shut out 2-0 by Northern Michigan in Marquette. Northern Michigan is in a three-way tie for eighth in the CCHA, and had the 11th offense in the league (The Nanooks were 10th) before Friday’s contest. The article quotes senior Trevor Hyatt, who is one of 20 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS award. Hyatt is profiled in this week’s edition of the award’s newsletter.

Thursday at the Patty Center, the women’s basketball team, with only six players, lost 55-50 to the Seattle Pacific Falcons.

Former men’s basketball bench boss Frank Ostanik hasn’t ruled out furthering his collegiate coaching career in the future, but for now, he’s right at home at Monroe Catholic High School, where he is also the Athletic Director and a teacher.

Tonight the Nanooks take on No. 14 Seattle Pacific. The Nanooks have a really short roster and are nursing some injuries, but they’re not giving up.

The Rifle team, once again, beat Army. [insert big gloating smile]

Here’s a News-Miner staff report about the success of three Alaska teams; hockey, swimming and rifle. The swimmers won their third meet on the road yesterday at Lewis & Clark, and the rifle team just beat Navy.

Also, CCHA productions featured Chad Johnson in “Behind the Mask.” You have to download silverlight to view it, I haven’t watched it yet, waiting for it to load and might have to run to the post office before it closes if it doesn’t start up.

Fun search terms January 15, 2009

The Internet is a vast, interconnecting web of sites, some related, some not so related. Blog stats are recorded and it shows me what search terms people use to find the site. Some of the good ones:

Jan. 15- “Too cold to ski?” (same exact title as one of my posts) and “how is hockey better than basketball”… I’d give my version of the answer, but that’s for another time and place.

This one’s interesting… it’s all one search term: “governor” “alaska” “nanook rifle team”… (end of search term) I wonder if someone has a scoop that I don’t. Is Sarah Palin suiting up for the Nanooks? (This site would sure love her to, I’m sure).

However, recently, I have to say that the most ambiguous search term is “time runs from me.” I can’t imagine which post it brought up… maybe someone browsed to the end of their search results. Or maybe I said it verbatim in a post somewhere… I’m not sure why anyone would search for it though.
